Employment Statistics

There's no mistaking it, the economy is putting everybody on edge right now. It's a time when one has to take a leaner approach to one's consumer habits. Ironically, although cutting out organic baby bath products within your household in order to save money may help you in the short term, it hurts the economy even more.

The news in Cincinnati is about the same as everywhere else in the country. While some centers such as New York, Las Angeles, and Chicago saw more jobs over the fall months, Cincinnati and smaller areas continue to see declining employment. In the fall, the national job losses were one tenth of what was predicting. That's good news as it means sooner or later our city will reap the benefits. However, further statistics showed we have yet to see a positive upswing, as unemployment rose to top ten percent. People are looking for jobs in any area; they'll help manufacture heatshrink sleeving or work a line as long as it pays.

The good news is that Cincinnati is fairly large, and that means there are different sectors where one can find employment. The best way to do this is through education. The days of easy to land (if not easy to work) jobs manning sling ropes and flipping burgers are starting to come to an end, largely because of technological advances. The jobs of the future will require a lot more education, and that means obtaining college and university degrees.

Armed with a degree, a whole new range of options is open to citizens of the city. There are many successful businesses operating here, including big names such as Proctor and Gamble, Convergys, and Norwood. They have their share of operations requiring employees to supervise the slurry mixer and do the odd tube cutting, but by and large the most jobs are in the business departments of these businesses. Those with a solid education can find opportunities in many areas here.

Speaking of education, it is interesting to note that the largest employer in the city is the University of Cincinnati. The massive campus requires a broad range of professors, aids, researchers, support staff, and administration in order to run.

So, if you are worried about the employment situation in the city, remember that education is the key. With employers like Kroger Company looking for help even in the middle of a recession, you can bet a degree will take you far.
